Otterbein Small Houses Stand Out at Environment for Aging Conference

LEBANON, OH- Last week was the Environments for Aging annual conference, held this year in Anaheim, California. The conference was attended by nearly 600 professionals, dominantly from the fields of health care and senior living. Two of the guest speakers were Sue McConn, vice president of Otterbein’s Skilled Nursing & Rehab Neighborhoods, and Brian Gruber, Principal of Ridge Stone Builders – the general contractors responsible for the construction of Otterbein “small house neighborhoods” throughout Ohio.

Sue and Brian had the opportunity to present details of the innovative “small house” nursing home model, a model in which Otterbein invested as early as 2007, and is the leading provider in the United States today. As Sue shared in her presentation, “the small house model is one of the most exciting concepts for skilled nursing that exists today, and represents the future of long-term care. The model is designed to get away from institutional nursing home environments and provide something better – a model with self-directed work teams and resident-centered care, all in a truly home-like environment.”

One of the hosts of the conference was Lois Bowers, the senior editor of Long-Term Living, a magazine and web-site. Lois listened intently, captured the essence of the presentation and included much of it in an article published this week in two magazines – Environments for Aging and Long Term Living.

It is our pleasure to share the article with you – it can be found at either of the two magazines web-sites and the following links:
